S is for... Swooning over James Holmes

Err... yeah, GOOD.

Just a quick one to voice my disbelief. So girls everywhere are declaring their love for Batman cinema shooter James Holmes?! Yeah, sounds feasible.

Check this out:

Astounding!

"Wow, look at that murderer's face! Isn't his bone structure something else..."

Totally, totally what I was thinking... NOT.

Seriously, some girls are ridiculous. This has to be attention seeking? How can you genuinely find someone who murdered anyone attractive?! Perhaps I just can't see past a person's personality...

It's an actual thing though- I didn't know. Hybristophilia: "a paraphilia involving being sexually aroused or attracted to people who have committed an outrage or a gruesome crime." A sexual deviation that experts say can be a "potentially lethal form of sexual expression". And the psychology behind it? "Bonnie and Clyde syndrome", taking the bad-boy fetish to a whole new level.

But it's common. Statistics show that male inmates who have committed violent crimes such as murder and rape, are more likely to gain groupies and have romantic relationships with pen pals than female prisoners. And even get married.

Take these guys for example:

  • Ted Bundy, '70's American serial killer who murdered over 30 women, had one of the biggest groupie followings, and received an average of 200 letters a day from women. He got married while behind bars, even while on death row.
  • Just last week, it was reported that Joran van der Sloot- the 24-year-old Dutch convicted murderer was planning to get married while serving his 28-year sentence in Peru.
  • Phil Spector met his current wife, Rachelle Short, after he was arrested for the 2003 murder of Lana Clarkson.
  • Erik Menendez, who was convicted of the 1989 murder of his parents has been happily married to Tammi Ruth Saccoman for 15 years.
  • His brother Lyle is also serving a life sentence for the murder of his parents and is on his second prison wife.
  • Angelo Buono and Kenneth Bianchi—the serial killers known as the Hillside Stranglers were convicted of kidnapping, raping, torturing, and murdering little girls and women in the late '70s, but both somehow found women to marry them.

Insane!

A psychology professor at the State University of New York-Stonybrook claims, "For some people it's threatening to be intimate," he says, "And a relationship with an incarcerated partner may give these people the sense of control they want or need when it comes to emotional closeness."

Maybe that explains it?! Or maybe it's the notoriety and fame that attracts these girls?

But, didn't Holmes have a dating profile? On which wasn't it stated “Will you visit me in prison?”? At first I laughed at how he'd shot himself in the foot writing that- "Way to put girls off, Holmes!". But perhaps I was wrong?! Maybe he'll be our next prisoner marriage?! He does seem to have quite the following. Perhaps a tactic others should adopt for internet dating? Has obviously worked for Holmes...

HE SHOT A SIX YEAR-OLD GIRL (amongst others).

Who knows what's going on here?

All I know is that I don't think that type of relationship is for me.

Anyone of a different opinion?

L.

P.s. On a more serious note- Batman was INCREDIBLE- right?!
